Wolfgang Fallmann wurde 1937 in Waidhofen/Ybbs geboren. Er studierte Physik an der Universität Wien und erwarb 1965 den Dr. phil. mit einer Dissertation über Galvano- und Thermomagnetische Effekte in Wismut und Wismut-Blei-Legierungen. Angestellt am Institut für Festkörperphysik der Ludwig Boltzmann Gesellschaft in Wien, arbeitete er auf dem Gebiet der Thermoelektrizität von Si-Ge-Verbindungen. Im Rahmen eines Forschungsaufenthaltes an den Universitäten Sheffield und Newcastle upon Tyne in den Jahren 1969 bis 1971 leistete er Beiträge zur Entwicklung von Gunn-Effekt-Bauelementen und ihrer Verwendung in schnellen logischen Schaltkreisen. Diese Thematik war auch die Grundlage für seine Habilitation. Als Assistent am Institut für Allgemeine Elektrotechnik und Elektronik der Technischen Universität Wien wurde er 1972 mit dem Aufbau und der Leitung des Halbleitertechnologie-Labors der TU Wien betraut und 1976 zum Ao.Universitätsprofessor ernannt. Der Schwerpunkt seiner Forschungs- und Lehrtätigkeit liegt auf den Gebieten der Halbleitertechnologie, der Nanolithographie mittels Ionenstrahlen und der Plasmatechnologie. Er leitet seit 1990 das Institut für Lithographieforschung der Erwin Schrödinger Gesellschaft für Mikrowissenschaften. In den Jahren 1995 - 1999 war er Vorstand des Institutes für Allgemeine Elektrotechnik und Elektronik der TU Wien bzw. seines Nachfolgers, des Instituts für Angewandte Elektronik und Quantenelektronik. 1990 bis 1994 war er Präsident der Gesellschaft für Mikroelektronik. Wolfgang Fallmann trat 2002 in den Ruhestand und wurde 2008 zum Ehrenmitglied der GMe ernannt.

Wolfgang Fallmann was born in Waidhofen/Ybbs, Austria, in 1937. He pursued his doctor's thesis on Galvano- and Thermomagnetic effects in bismuth and bismuth lead alloys at the Physics Department of the University of Vienna, where he received his Ph.D. in 1965. He was employed at the Institute of Solid State Physics of the Ludwig Boltzmann Society in Vienna, working in the field of thermoelectricity in Si-Ge-Alloys. From 1969 to 1971, he was on a sabbatical leave at the Universities of Sheffield and Newcastle upon Tyne, UK, for the investigation of Gunn-effect logic circuits. In 1972 he joined the Institute of Electrical Engineering and Electronics of the TU Vienna and was responsible for the establishment and administration of the semiconductor technology laboratory at the TU Vienna. 1976 he obtained the venia legendi and became Professor at the institute. His teaching and research areas include semiconductor device technology, nanolithography based on ion projection, and plasma technology. Since 1990, he is Head of the Institute of Research on Lithography of the Erwin Schroedinger Society for Microsciences. From 1995 to 1999, he was Head of the Institute of Electrical Engineering and Electronics of the Technical University in Vienna. From 1990 to 1994, he was president of the Society for Microelectronics (GMe). Wolfgang Fallmann retired in 2002 and was made a Member of Honor of the GMe in 2008.
